References on resume are individuals who can tell our potential employer something about your skills, abilities, experience and accomplishments. At least, you should choose as your references such people.
In other words, the people should know who are you and can give an honest assessment of how well you can do the job and if it is a good idea to employ you. Being like that, your reference should be someone who you have worked with, preferably your boss. Don’t make the mistake of using pals, relatives or friends as your referrals.
These people may know you in person but know nothing about your professional skills and accomplishments. Doing so, you can only achieve that the employer will have the feeling you have no real former bosses who you can include as a references – and that’s not good for your application of course…
You need to have trust in your references
Your reference should be someone that will provide an accurate and positive feedback from questions made by prospective employer regarding your past work history and suitability for the job. If you did not have a very good relation with your former boss, it makes no sense to include him within your references. Just think about it, it is logical.
Some of your references could be your college teachers, former work supervisors and managers, or notable individuals in the industry who know you and your abilities well and think in positive matters about you.
Please remember that the references on resume play a significant role because they can favorably determine or undermine your chances of getting the job!
Always communicate with them
Before you put a name and contact details of someone in your resume, you should speak with them. Tell them about you desire to include them as a reference. Ask them if it is OK for them. Most people will agree to be your reference, do not be afraid.
If you had good working relations with people, you can be sure they will give good feedback about you.
Think also about the fact how would your references evaluate your character abilities. Will they say that you are an innovative, precise, but hardworking person at the same time? If they can, it will boost your application significantly.
Provide references always, even if it is not needed
We advise you mentioning the contact details of your references, even if it is not indicated in the job advertisement.
You will wonder, but just 1 of 10 resumes includes any references with contact details. And as you can probably guess, candidates stating their personal references on resume, get interview invitations much more often.
It does not matter from which industry of field you have worked. Even if you have switched careers in the recent past, you can still get good feedback from reliable references. Unrelated reference is still better than no reference. Do not forget on that, use it for your advantage and get a job. Good luck!
